Kingsgate Education’s mission is simple: to
encourage students to seek truth in all their intellectual endeavours, and to
achieve their academic potential. Critical thinking should be an integral component of a traditional education. In Hong Kong, however, the tradition of rote-learning in order merely to pass exams and accumulate A grades has held sway. High grades are a necessary condition for university entrance. But they are by no means a sufficient one. In the UK around 30,000 students annually achieve 3 A grades at A-level; but Oxford and Cambridge offer only 6000 places. Higher-level critical faculties remain the defining feature of an intellectual, and these are tested in university entrance tests and interviews, as well as being essential life skills. Critical thinking and exam success are complementary, not mutually-exclusive. Modern exams must be passed with the best grades possible to get admissions tutors to look past the exams. At Oxford, for example, students will find it difficult to get to interview without 7 A* at GCSE. Exams do matter and at Kingsgate students can be assured of the best exam preparation possible. |
